Chris Armas will replace Michael Carrick as assistant coach, but his name is unfamiliar to anyone in England – or Europe. He has spent most of the last years working as a coach in the United States.

As a player, he was the “heart and soul” of teams such as the Long Island Raph Raiders, Los Angeles Galaxy and Chicago Fire. He has defended the colors of the US team 66 times, although injuries prevented him from participating in the 2002 World Cup, in which the US team reached the quarter-finals.

In 2007, he joined the Chicago Fire coaching staff, after which he became the head coach of the women’s team at Adelphi University in New York, his alma mater.

He has been out of work recently after being fired by Toronto after a record 7-1 defeat to DC United. This was their sixth consecutive defeat.

Those who know Armas celebrate his love of competition and a winning mentality, combined with inexhaustible optimism. He shares many of Rangnick’s philosophies and is able to find a common language with anyone. Anyway, that’s what they say. This, however, does not negate the fact that it is very strange to see the 49-year-old American in the role of the right hand of his coach. So what did he forget?
